Port-forwarded TCP connections which close one direction before the other should now be reliably supported, with EOF propagated independently in the two directions. In particular, there should now no longer be an unreasonably small limit on the number of port forwardings PuTTY can store. Ideally the pattress should be either softwood or something like 9mm plywood, the nails should be driven at an angle downwards through the pattress and into the wall and the nails need to be orientated in the same direction as the laths (horizontal). It is possible to fix a pattress to a lath and plaster wall with oval nails (1-1/2 to 3in ones). So, I think I'd start at a corner then set out 16in centres to the approximate area you want your TV to go, then using a drill or an awl probe to see if you can hit a stud. When you pin skirtings on the skirtings are often actually fixed with a grip adhesive - all the pins do is hold the skirting up whilst the glue sets (really!) - so it matters little where you put the pins If you've had the skirtings replaced then that's out, I'm afraid. Studs are invariable on 16in (not 400mm) centres, although this cannot always be guaranteed, and you'll always get a stud either side of a door opening as well as in a corner to start from by "dead reckoning" if you will. Another clue might be in the skirtings, if they are original, where it is sometimes possible to make-out slight depressions in the surface of the skirting where it has been nailed to studs, punched under and filled (and the filler has shrunk slightly) - visible in a light held almost parallel to the skirtingh. Both are steel, and therefore magnetic, and can be detected by slowly passing a rare earth magnet across the wall. Either way the means of finding studs in both types of walls are similar - plasterboard until trhe 1990s was generally nailed to the stiuds with a type of galvanised clout nail whilst laths are nailed to the studs using what looks like a furniture tack. 1950s seems late for a lath and plaster wall - Gypsum boards and plaster were introduced late '20s/early 30's so after WWII they became almost universal very quickly (in part because they are both faster to install and cheaper than lath). Hopefully you can get a nice smooth surface with your trowel on your first attempt. Doing this will keep sand out of the finish coat. You can see me do this with the edge of my float in the video several times. Before laying this coat it’s a good idea to scrape down any areas of existing plaster that have sand stuck to them. It should be fairly thin, perhaps a ¼ inch or so. This coat should sit a bit below the final surface to leave room for the finish coat. This coat is a mix of sand and plaster as well. The second coat goes on much easier as most of the holes and gaps in the lath will already be filled in. Lots of it can end up on the floor or on your head. The plaster is more or less squeezed through the holes or gaps in the lath. In older homes it often had horse hair or other fibres to help it stick to the lath. The first coat, called the scratch coat, is a mixture of sand and plaster. Each coat of new plaster should be misted with a squirt bottle before the next coat is applied as well. The existing plaster and lath needs to be slightly damp. You can spread the coats out over a few days or even do them all on the same day. Plastering is usually done in 2 or 3 coats. For general interior work gypsum based materials are a better choice for amateurs. Lime plaster is the superior choice especially for kitchens and baths but it’s much harder to work with. Gypsum plaster, known as plaster of Paris is also made by heating in a kiln. The resulting lime is used for plastering and for cement. Lime plaster is the oldest type, made by burning limestone in a kiln. Plaster can be gypsum or lime based or even a mix of the two. When repairing or restoring a plaster surface it’s important that the lath is secure and sound. In both cases the lath is fastened to the ceiling joists or wall studs. Lath nowadays is a metal screen-like material but earlier construction is thin strips of wood. Plaster construction has two parts, the foundation called lath, and the plaster that is spread through it and on top of it. Spray bottle Plaster wall and ceiling construction Hammer and chisel for opening up the plaster. Get some galvanized nails for fixing down the lath. It’s a latex product that washes up with water. Plaster bonder is also a great idea as it really helps with adhesion. The wood should be roughly an inch and a bit wide and a quarter inch thick. You can use metal lath, or wood if you prefer. Use general purpose sand for your 1st and 2nd layers. It will give you around an hour of working time. It’s a plaster of Paris based product with premixed retardant. It will set up before you can get it out of the bucket. Watch the video or continue reading and you can learn how to repair plaster walls and ceilings too.ĭon’t use straight plaster of Paris. Renovations, electrical work and plumbing problems often require plaster repair work in your house. While it was a big very messy job I am super happy with the end result. Having said all that I ended up using a gypsum plaster product to patch up some rather large holes I’d made in my ceiling. ‘A few drops of dishwashing detergent’ isn’t really helpful is it? Cream of tartar supposedly works too but I’ve had no luck with it. The tradespeople aren’t giving up their secrets. Retardant information is not readily available on the internet in any meaningful form. Plaster ‘sets’ or cures in a way similar to concrete. I have tried some of them myself and the biggest issue one faces is knowing what retardants are needed to slow down the cure. And it is very hard to find any tradespeople still doing it.īecause of the skill required some types of plastering are simply too difficult for the average homeowner. Drywall has almost completely replaced it in North America. The ancient art of plastering is sadly dying in our modern era. But it isn’t like drywall and uses very different techniques and materials. Learning how to repair plaster walls and ceilings isn’t as hard as you think. If you omit the optional PrefixMappings and CustomXMLPart arguments, Word searches each of the custom XML parts in order and maps the control to the first part that successfully retrieves a custom XML node using the specified XPath. Dim strXPath As StringĪctiveDocument.ContentControls(1).XMLMapping.SetMapping strXPath The following is an example of doing this with an XPath that refers to a data store node containing the value of the first fruitType element. To do this, pass a String containing a valid XPath to a ContentControl object by using the SetMapping method of the XMLMapping object (using the XMLMapping property of the ContentControl object). Setting an XML mapping on a content control then specifies the node in the added custom XML part, using that XPath expression.Īfter you add a custom XML part to your document (and after the custom XML part contains XML), you are ready to map one of its nodes to a content control. To create an XML mapping, you use an XPath expression to specify the node in the custom XML data part to which you want to map a content control. ĪctiveDocument.CustomXMLParts().Load ("c:\mySampleCustomXMLFile.xml") The following sample code demonstrates how to attach an XML file to a document, so that it becomes an available data store item. Now, suppose the content control is mapped to a node of the previous custom XML part. Suppose the content control will be mapped to the following sample custom XML file. Add a custom XML part to the document that contains the content control you want to map to custom XML data. If you call the XML property of a CustomXMLPart object, a string is returned, which contains the XML in that data store.īuild a valid custom XML file and save it to your hard disk drive. You can always view the contents of a custom XML part by calling the read-only XML property on it. The default custom XML parts stored with a Word document contain the document's standard document properties you cannot delete these parts. Next, you must load XML into the newly defined part by calling the Load method of the CustomXMLPart object, using a valid path to an XML file as the parameter, or by calling the LoadXML method of the CustomXMLPart and passing the XML directly. Because it is empty, there is no XML to map to. This appends a new, empty custom XML part to the document. To load custom XML data, you must first add a new custom XML part to a Document object by using the Add method of the CustomXMLParts collection. It points to all the custom XML parts that are stored in a document.Ī CustomXMLPart object represents a single custom XML part in the data store. The CustomXMLParts property returns a CustomXMLParts collection that contains CustomXMLPart objects. By using XML Path Language (XPath), you can programmatically map content in an XML file to a content control. You can map these content controls to an element in an XML file. Now, we can multiply through the parenthesis in ( 5 + □ ) ( 5 − □ ) and simplify: Treating ( 5 + □ ) and ( 5 − □ ) as single terms, we can multiply through the parenthesis to obtain Since the coefficient of □ is equal to 1, we can write the equation as Hence, its roots will be 5 + □ and 5 − □. We recall the conjugate root theorem, which states that the complex roots of a quadratic equation with real coefficients occur in complex conjugate pairs. In this example, we are given that a quadratic equation with real coefficients has a complex root. To reconstruct an equation given one of its complex roots as the next example will demonstrate.Įxample 5: Reconstructing a Quadratic Equation from a Complex Rootįind the quadratic equation □ + □ □ + □ = 0 with real coefficients □ and □ that has 5 + □ as one of its roots. We can also use our knowledge of the roots of quadratic equations with real coefficients We remember that complex numbers are equal to each other if their real parts are equal and their imaginary parts are equal. Furthermore, since a quadratic equation only has two roots, □ + □ □ must be the conjugate of □ + □ □. Since □ ≠ 0, we know that □ + □ □ is a complex root to a quadratic equation with real coefficients. What conditions, if any, must □, □, □, and □ satisfy? Answer The complex numbers □ + □ □ and □ + □ □, where □, □, □,Īre the roots of a quadratic equation with real coefficients. We can summarize the result of the previous example as follows.Įxample 4: Complex Roots of Quadratic Equations However, since □ is a root, we know that □ □ + □ □ + □ = 0 . We also know from the properties of the complex conjugate that for any two complex numbers □, and □ are real numbers, we can rewrite this as Given that any real number is equal to its complex conjugate and that □, įrom the properties of the complex conjugate, we know that for any two complex numbers Using the properties of the complex conjugate, we will provide a proof of this Let us examine whether or not these complex roots must be complex conjugates. If the discriminant is negative, then we know that the quadratic equation will have complex roots. Recall that the discriminant of a quadratic equation □ □ + □ □ + □ = 0 is the expression □ − 4 □ □ . If the discriminant of a quadratic equation with real coefficients is negative, will its complex roots be a conjugate pair? Answer In the next example, we will examine this fact in detail.Įxample 3: Conditions on the Roots of Quadratic Equations Inįact, it is true for any quadratic equation with real coefficients which has complex solutions. The fact that the roots of this equation are a complex conjugate pair is no accident. When we examine the solutions closely, we can notice that the two complex solutions are conjugates of each other. In the previous example, we observed that the quadratic equation had two complex solutions. Hence, we have two solutions for the quadratic equation: Recalling the property of complex numbers for a positive number □, Substituting these values into the quadratic formula, we have The given quadratic equation has the values □ = 1, □ = − 4, and □ = 8. Recall the quadratic formula for solving the quadratic equation □ □ + □ □ + □ = 0 : Solve the quadratic equation □ − 4 □ + 8 = 0 . Compared to DSM-IV, the version before the DSM-5, patients can be diagnosed with autistic disorder, Asperger’s syndrome, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified. These are: with/without accompanying intellectual impairment with/without accompanying language impairment associated with a known medical or genetic condition or environmental factor associated with another neurodevelopmental, mental, or behavioral disorder and with catatonia. In this guideline, the more specific ASD subtypes or specifiers are recognized. The Autism DSM-5 criteria is one of the many tools specialists can use to diagnose ASD.To diagnose ASD, a practitioner will have the patient undergo screenings, genetic tests, evaluations, and tests. However, people who are at risk of being born with ASD are those who have a family history of autism, have genetic mutations/disorders, have low birth weight, are exposed to toxins/heavy metals/viral infections/certain medications, and are born to older parents. The exact cause of ASD is still unknown.Symptoms of ASD, which generally appear before one turns 5, are communication issues, having restricted/repetitive patterns of behavior/activities, stimming, and others such as seizes, elated skills, unusual emotional reactions/eating habits/sleep patterns, and hyperactive/impulsive behaviors.People diagnosed with ASD may be experiencing problems with interaction/social communication and have repetitive/restricted interests/behaviors.Autism, also known as Autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a group of neurodevelopmental conditions. Clinical Information and Criteria Clinical Information When you call 911, the operator asks: “Do you need police, fire, or medical?” But when payday comes, EMS workers are treated very differently than their fellow first responders because the city still refuses to recognize EMS as a uniformed emergency service. For years, the city deflected on addressing the need for FDNY EMS wage hikes by arguing they could only come about through collective bargaining, obscuring their own role in resisting wage hikes and insinuating EMS workers were only underpaid because they were bad at organizing. We have all the proof we need: Under FDNY, it’s been too easy for the city to ignore the needs of EMS workers. In order to guarantee that EMS first responders get the protections and benefits they need going forward, the city must undo the failed merger and give EMS its own agency. This victory will make a real difference for New York City’s street doctors, but it’s not enough. Last month, in the culmination of a years-long hard-fought battle, DC 37 was able to help FDNY EMS secure a historic wage raise through collective bargaining. If the way a city spends its money directly reflects its values, then this colossal wage gap sends a clear but terrible message: rank-and-file EMS workers - most of whom are women and people of color - are second-class first responders. For a full-time worker, that amounts to barely above legal minimum wage. Meanwhile, an EMT would need to work 20 years to bring home $75,000. After five years on the job, a firefighter can bring home more than $100,000 annually with holiday pay and overtime. But medically-trained EMS workers, who save the lives of distressed New Yorkers day in and day out, start at only $33,320 per year. Indeed, the starting salary for a NYPD officer is $42,500, while a firefighter makes $45,196 to start. But the reality could not be further from the truth: EMS workers have historically been paid way less than rookie cops and firefighters. Based on their obvious necessity, you would think EMS workers would be among the highest-paid civil servants in our city. Without blinking an eye, these frontline street doctors worked 16-hour shifts and responded to more than 7,000 emergency 911 calls in a single day. In those dark and early days of the virus, EMS workers were the very first responders risking their lives as hundreds upon hundreds of infected and contagious New Yorkers tragically died each day. If you’ve been following me, you know I’ve spoken about this many times, even before the COVID-19 hit New York.ĮMS workers have always been everyday heroes, but the enduring pandemic has reminded us all of the extraordinary work they do. Unfortunately, this arrangement has failed EMS workers in myriad ways. What they probably don’t think about are the approximately 4,800 EMS workers - EMTs, EMS trainees, paramedics and officers - and you can’t really blame them given the way the department’s Bureau of Emergency Medical Services has been treated by the City of New York.Įver since 1996, as the result of a well-intentioned agency consolidation to streamline services between FDNY and New York City Health and Hospitals Corp., EMS workers have fallen under FDNY’s umbrella. When the average New Yorker thinks about the mighty Fire Department, they probably think of heroic firefighters, burning buildings, billowing smoke, big red loud firetrucks, and maybe even a firefighter rescuing a kitten stuck in a tree. Today, in the City Council, I am introducing legislation that seeks to undo that merger and reimagine a standalone Department of Emergency Medical Services to finally give EMS workers the respect they’ve long deserved. It has been 25 years since the Emergency Medical Service was merged with FDNY. leaving a software development job to become a professional gamer).
